Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States and the largest and most populated in the state of Texas. It is nicknamed the “Space City” thanks to the presence of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, which houses Mission Control. Houston is a largely technological global city with an industrial base in energy, aeronautics, and transportation. The city also houses the world’s largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions with the Texas Medical Center.

The city of Houston was founded in 1836 after two real estate entrepreneurs purchased land along the Buffalo Bayou with the intention of building a city there. The men named the city after Samuel Houston, who was a popular figure as the president of Texas and general at the Battle of San Jacinto. Today, Houston has a population of nearly 2.3 million covering an area of nearly 600 square miles.
